Haarlem’s latest power trio SCOLASTICS is one to watch. Formed in 2024, the band is led by multi-instrumentalist Louis Inghels, joined by local heavyweights Guus van Oosterum (bass) and Niels Klooster (drums). Their mission? To create music that’s pounding, straightforward, yet eclectic, fusing metal, rock, punk, and a big dose of groove.
With a minimalist cover and just four tracks, their debut EP (March 2025) may seem modest, but don’t be fooled. This is rich, heavy material with serious staying power.
- Elements
A slow burner that eases you into their sonic world. Spacious, dynamic, and perfectly paced. A thoughtful opener that hints at the depth to come. - Under the Dessert Sun
Groove-heavy and full of drive, this one bursts with rhythm. Think of Saturday nights, beer in hand, and energy you can’t quite explain but love! A joyful, raw rock experience. - Theater of the Mind
More layered and atmospheric, showing a different side of the band. You can hear that the vocalist has even more to give his range and expression suggest exciting potential still untapped. - Four Crows
The hit. The hook. Their first single and still the highlight of the EP. Catchy, raw, and laced with rock ‘n roll swagger. A brilliant bassline takes center stage, and the tight drumming of Klooster keeps the energy relentless. It’s a track that won’t leave your head any time soon.
Conclusion
SCOLASTICS delivers a compact but powerful debut. It’s not instant gratification for me, but a grower. Each spin pulls you in deeper. Their blend of alt-rock, punk grit and metal groove feels fresh, yet grounded in classic energy.
The band already shows impressive musical chemistry and leaves you wanting more. Vocally, there’s clearly more in the tank, something that becomes apparent throughout the EP. Personally, I hope they choose to push those boundaries even further on future releases. With their eyes on the Dutch scene and beyond, this trio is just getting started.
