WMB Voorronde Noord Brabant – Neverus

Neverus battled it out in the preliminary Wacken Metal Battle Noord Brabant against Sapphyr, Dodentocht and Everything Decays. After releasing a very successful debut album last year, they are now advancing to the semi-finals later this year, and competing for a spot at Wacken Open Air. We asked the band some questions to get to know them better.

Congrats on your win! How does that feel?

Thank you, it feels amazing! We always come away from a show with very warm feelings for the performance, for the crowd, for the other bands etc… it’s great to have that reflected back at us like this, by winning the first round.
And wow – the competition was so strong! It’s astounding to see how much talent is coming out of Noord-Brabant at the moment.

For those who don’t know you yet: who are you and what do you do?

We’re from Eindhoven, we play what we call “Majestic Death Metal” – a mix of colourful epicness and razor-sharp fury. We’re a four-piece band: Roman, Robin, and Joris are all Dutch; I’m British but live in The Netherlands… my Dutch is improving but not fully capable yet, hence these replies being in English 😉

What are your sources of inspiration?

My inspirations come from all over. Musically we nod to Wintersun, Blind Guardian, Fleshgod Apocalypse, and so on. Emotionally and lyrically, much of the inspiration comes from films and storytelling. One of our most style-defining songs, “Lazarus”, is a prequel to Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar”, for example.

Your debut album was released last year. Now you are in the semi-finals of the Metal Battle. Good things for Neverus, I think. How is that for you?

Yes for sure! We’ve been so grateful for the response we’ve had at shows, online, and indeed now at the battles. It’s fantastic to see so many people making an emotional connection to this art that we’ve poured ourselves into. Both on stage and after the shows, we love meeting all these new fans and friends and hearing about how they’ve reacted to it all!

No matter how far we get in the battles (of course we hope to go all the way!), we’ll forever love the opportunity to bring our music to even more people.

What do you think of the other bands participating in the preliminary rounds? There is a lot of diversity, but little in your genre. What do you think about that? Is that an advantage or a disadvantage?

Noord-Brabant should really be proud of itself, there was so much skill and talent at our preliminary battle! When we were waiting for the results from the judges, we really couldn’t predict who was going to win.

As for there being not much in our genre – we think it depends on how precisely a genre is defined.
Arguably a band’s musical identity should forge a new genre variant all by itself!
Luckily our music hints at many styles (prog metal, death metal, power metal, etc), so we can fit into multiple shows that aim at very different genres – our first ever show was at ProgPower, for example, and one of our most recent ones was March Into Walhalla, which is a folk metal festival! Both were fantastic experiences of course, and we could see that both audiences were having a wonderful time.

Suppose you had not won – who do you think should have?

That’s… such a tough question. Honestly, every band playing had real strength and ability. And with the genres being so different, it can be difficult to make a comparison.
Everything Decays had fantastic groove; Sapphyr brought some incredibly raw power; and Dodentocht created a great sense of slow massiveness. It would really have been a roll of the dice!

What can we expect from you in the semi-finals?

Well we treat every show like its own person, so we’ll find out together! But broadly, you can always expect energy, melodic intensity, and to have a damn good time at a Neverus show – we hope to see you there!

Neverus ging de strijd aan tijdens de voorronde van de Wacken Metal Battle Noord-Brabant tegen Sapphyr, Dodentocht en Everything Decays. Na het uitbrengen van een zeer succesvol debuutalbum vorig jaar, gaan ze nu door naar de halve finales later dit jaar en strijden ze voor een plek op Wacken Open Air. We stelden de band enkele vragen om ze beter te leren kennen.

Gefeliciteerd met je overwinning! Hoe voelt dat?

Dank je, het voelt geweldig! Elk optreden zijn we blij met het publiek, de andere bands, en hoe we zelf spelen. Het is geweldig om dat nu terug te zien komen door de eerste ronde te winnen.
En wow – de concurrentie was zo sterk! Het is tof om te zien hoeveel talent er momenteel uit Noord-Brabant komt.

Voor degenen die je nog niet kennen: wie zijn jullie en wat doen jullie?

We komen uit Eindhoven, we spelen wat we “Majestic Death Metal” noemen – een mix van kleurrijke grootsheid en vlijmscherpe woede. We zijn een vierkoppige band: Roman, Robin en Joris zijn allemaal Nederlands; ik ben Brits maar woon in Nederland… mijn Nederlands verbetert maar is nog niet helemaal perfect, vandaar dat deze antwoorden in het Engels zijn 😉

Wat zijn jullie inspiratiebronnen?

Mijn inspiraties komen van overal. Muzikaal kijken we naar Wintersun, Blind Guardian, Fleshgod Apocalypse, enzovoort. Emotioneel en tekstueel komt veel inspiratie uit films en verhalen. Ja zeker! We zijn zo dankbaar voor de respons die we hebben gekregen bij optredens, online, en inderdaad nu bij de battles. Het is fantastisch om te zien dat zoveel mensen een emotionele connectie maken met deze kunstvorm waar we onszelf in hebben gegoten. Zowel op het podium als na de shows, vinden we het geweldig om al deze nieuwe fans en vrienden te ontmoeten en te horen hoe ze onze muziek bleven.

Ongeacht hoe ver we komen in de battles (natuurlijk hopen we helemaal door te gaan!), zullen we altijd de kans blijven waarderen om onze muziek aan nog meer mensen te laten horen.

Wat vind je van de andere bands die deelnemen aan de voorrondes? Er is veel diversiteit, maar weinig in jullie genre. Wat vind je daarvan? Is dat een voordeel of een nadeel?

Noord-Brabant mag echt trots zijn op zichzelf, er was zoveel skill en talent bij onze voorronde! We konden echt niet voorspellen wie er zou winnen deze voorronde.
Wat betreft het gebrek aan veel in ons genre – we denken dat het afhangt van hoe precies een genre wordt gedefinieerd. Je zou kunnen stellen dat de muzikale identiteit van een band op zichzelf al een nieuw genrevariant zou moeten smeden!

Gelukkig hint onze muziek naar veel verschillende stijlen (prog metal, death metal, power metal, enz.), dus we passen in meerdere shows die zich richten op zeer verschillende genres – ons allereerste optreden was bijvoorbeeld op ProgPower, en een van onze meest recente was March Into Walhalla, wat een folk metal festival is! Beide waren natuurlijk fantastische ervaringen, en we konden zien dat bij beide optreden het publiek ons vet vond.

Stel dat jullie niet hadden gewonnen – wie denk je dat er dan had moeten winnen?

Dat is… zo’n moeilijke vraag. Eerlijk gezegd had elke band die speelde skill en power. En met de genres zo verschillend, kan het moeilijk zijn om een vergelijking te maken.
Everything Decays had een fantastische groove; Sapphyr bracht ongelooflijke rauwe kracht; en Dodentocht creëerde een geweldig gevoel van langzame massiveness. Het zou echt een gok zijn geweest!

Wat kunnen we van jullie verwachten in de halve finales?

Nou, we behandelen elk optreden als een op zichzelf staand iets, dus dat zullen we ontdekken! Maar over het algemeen kun je altijd energie, melodische intensiteit en een geweldige tijd verwachten bij een Neverus-optreden – we hopen je daar te zien!
