WMB Voorronde Groningen – Baas

Welcome to the BossPit. Dat is hoe ik Baas voor het eerst aangekondigd zag, toen ze een live optreden bij 44NextDoor zouden doen. Helaas ging dat niet door, maar de BOSS energie kruipt waar het kan en kroop zijn weg naar de Metal Battle voorrondes in Groningen. BAAS won het daar van Festering Existence, Basta en 7 Black Sides om het op 22 maart 2024 op te nemen in de halve finales. Wie zijn die boze mannen?

Gefeliciteerd met jullie winst! Hoe voelt dat? 

Te gek! Wij hadden het echt niet verwacht, dit jaar was de concurrentie van hoogstaand niveau hier in Groningen. Des te sweeter the victory natuurlijk. 

Voor degene die jullie nog niet kennen: wie zijn jullie en wat doen jullie? 

Wij zijn BAAS. Ooit opgericht door Tobi (gitaar) en Teo (bas), begonnen we als rechttoe rechtaan hardcore uit het Groningse thaibokscircuit. Onze missie was de intensiteit van de ring overbrengen in dikke riffs en harde breakdowns.

In de afgelopen jaren zijn we volwassener geworden en de samenstelling van de band is ook veranderd. Drummer Jeroen en zanger Thomas hebben onze sound veel progressiever en melodischer gemaakt. Het is nu meer een mix van intensiteit, dynamiek en RAW POWER. We gaan er zelf in ieder geval heel hard op.

Ik hoor veel old-school metal terug in jullie muziek. Wie zijn jullie inspiratiebronnen?

Het zijn er heel veel, maar als je echt puur naar de essentie van BAAS kijkt dan kun je zeggen dat Machine Head, Pantera, Faith No More, Guns ‘n Roses en Led Zeppelin heel erg in onze DNA zitten. Je hoort de 90’s invloeden dus goed terug in onze songs. Niet zo gek ook, want we zijn 90’s kids.

Tegenwoordig luisteren we veel naar bands als Gojira, Trivium, In Flames, Meshuggah en The Ocean. Maar ook naar Nederlandse helden uit de scene als Distant, Adversary en The Charm The Fury (zo zonde dat deze band niet meer bestaat… RIP).    

Ik zag ergens de term ‘boze mannen muziek’ voorbij komen. Herkennen jullie je daar in? En zijn jullie echt altijd boos op alles? Of zijn jullie stiekem heel lief en cuddly?

Wij zijn voornamelijk drie dikke ADHD’ers (Tobi, Jeroen & Teo) en een introverteling (zanger Thomas). Wat gebeurt er als je drie stuiterballen om je heen hebt die allemaal roepen WAT je moet zingen en HOE je het moet uiten? Juist: creatieve eruptie. RAAAAAAAAAAGE!

Om eerlijk te zijn, we zijn eigenlijk nooit echt boos. We hebben gewoon superveel energie als vier puppy’s die achter hun staart aan rennen en af en toe een schoen kapot bijten. 

Was de Metal Battle een van jullie grotere optredens of zijn jullie gewend om al op grotere podia te staan? (En hoe was het om daar te spelen?)

Café De Walrus is best klein. We hebben wel op wat grotere podia gestaan als Simplon en Oude RKZ. Dat is wel een verschil, want je kunt dan lekker rondlopen, springen en dansen. Een kleiner podium is iets intiemer en heeft als voordeel dat je er makkelijk vanaf loopt om in het publiek te headbangen. Die energie is ook supervet.

Jullie optreden op Twitch bij 44NextDoor ging helaas niet door. Komt daar nog een vervangende datum voor, zodat heel de wereld jullie energie live kan zien? 

Dat gaat zeker nog een keer gebeuren! Mike en Ray zijn echt topgasten en we vinden wat ze doen voor de muziekscene in Nederland heel tof. We zijn nu op zoek naar een nieuwe datum. Hopelijk kan iedereen ons ergens deze lente in de Twitch-livestream zien losgaan. 

We releasen in de lente ook de eerste single van onze nieuwe EP BURDEN. De track heet EGOTRIP, een echte banger is het. Die kun je dan sowieso live verwachten bij 44NextDoor. Net als onze ballads TRY en NEVER EVER, die kunnen we tijdens zo’n battle niet spelen, maar het zijn echt pareltjes. Houd dus onze socials in de gaten. Stel dat jullie niet gewonnen hadden, wie had er volgens jullie dan moeten winnen?

Wij hadden niet verwacht dat we van Festering Existence zouden winnen. Hele strakke deathmetalband en hele aardige gasten. Houd ze in de gaten!

Wat kunnen we van jullie verwachten tijdens de halve finale?

We hebben een nieuwe harde track in de maak, die is over een paar weken wel klaar. Dan kunnen we gelijk testen of het doet wat we willen dat het doet in de set. Namelijk meer spanning opbouwen in het begin zodat het einde van de show nog harder knalt. 

En daarnaast gaan we gewoon keihard knallen. Want… WIJ. ZIJN. BAAS.

Another winner in our line-up of winners this year in the Wacken Metal Battle preliminary. Aptly naming their shows ‘Welcom To The Bosspit’, Baas is brining the energy both in the their music as in their stage performance. Let’s get to know these bosses a little better.

Congratulations on your win! How does it feel?

Awesome! We really didn’t expect it, the competition was of a very high standard here in Groningen this year. So, the victory is even sweeter, of course.

For those who don’t know you yet: who are you and what do you do?

We are BAAS. Founded by Tobi (guitar) and Teo (bass), we started out as straightforward hardcore from the Groningen kickboxing circuit. Our mission was to convey the intensity of the ring through thick riffs and hard breakdowns.

Over the years, we’ve matured, and the composition of the band has changed. Drummer Jeroen and singer Thomas have made our sound much more progressive and melodic. It’s now more of a mix of intensity, dynamics, and RAW POWER. We’re really into it ourselves.

I hear a lot of old-school metal in your music. Who are your inspirations?

There are a lot, but if you look purely at the essence of BAAS, you could say that Machine Head, Pantera, Faith No More, Guns ‘n Roses, and Led Zeppelin are deeply ingrained in our DNA. So, you can really hear the 90s influences in our songs. Which isn’t surprising, because we’re 90s kids.

These days we listen a lot to bands like Gojira, Trivium, In Flames, Meshuggah, and The Ocean. But also to Dutch heroes from the scene like Distant, Adversary, and The Charm The Fury (such a shame that this band no longer exists… RIP).

I saw the term ‘angry men music’ somewhere. Do you recognize yourselves in that? And are you really always angry about everything? Or are you secretly very sweet and cuddly?

We’re mainly three big ADHD’ers (Tobi, Jeroen & Teo) and an introvert (singer Thomas). What happens when you have three bouncing balls around you all shouting WHAT you should sing and HOW you should express it? Exactly: creative eruption. RAAAAAAAGE!

To be honest, we’re actually never really angry. We just have loads of energy like four puppies chasing their tails and occasionally chewing up a shoe.

Was the Metal Battle one of your bigger gigs or are you used to playing on larger stages? (And how was it to play there?)

Café De Walrus is quite small. We have played on some larger stages like Simplon and Oude RKZ. That’s a difference because you can walk around, jump, and dance. A smaller stage is a bit more intimate and the advantage is that you can easily step off to headbang in the crowd. That energy is also super cool.

Your performance on Twitch at 44NextDoor unfortunately didn’t happen. Will there be a replacement date so that the whole world can see your energy live?

That will definitely happen again! Mike and Ray are really great guys and we appreciate what they’re doing for the music scene in the Netherlands. We’re now looking for a new date. Hopefully, everyone can see us rock out somewhere this spring on the Twitch livestream.

We’re also releasing the first single from our new EP BURDEN in the spring. The track is called EGOTRIP, it’s a real banger. You can definitely expect to hear it live at 44NextDoor. As well as our ballads TRY and NEVER EVER, which we can’t play during a battle like that, but they’re really gems. So, keep an eye on our socials. Insta: @baasdeband and @44nextdoorlivestreamstage.

If you hadn’t won, who do you think should have won?

We didn’t expect to beat Festering Existence. They’re a very tight death metal band and really nice guys. Keep an eye on them!

What can we expect from you during the semi-final?

We have a new hard track in the works, it should be ready in a few weeks. Then we can test right away if it does what we want it to do in the set. Namely, build more tension in the beginning so that the end of the show hits even harder.

And besides that, we’re just going to rock out hard. Because… WE. ARE. BAAS.
