Arluna – About Universal Destiny (interview)

Arluna is een relatief nieuwe, symphonische metalband. Een week geleden hebben ze de eerste single van hun nieuwe album, Universal Destiny, gereleased. Tijd om de band wat vragen te stellen over hun inspiratie voor dit nieuwe album, en om ze beter te leren kennen. 

Voor degene die dit lezen en jullie nog niet kennen (en dat zijn er vast veel); vertel! Wie zijn jullie, wat doen jullie, waar komen jullie vandaan? 

Wij zijn de Symfonische metal band Arluna ( Joan,Leo,David,Robin,Aron). We oefenen in Leiden. Wij zijn bezig met componeren en arrangeren van muziek .We experimenteren door het combineren van verschillende muzikale elementen om op die manier een unieke Arluna sound te creëren.

Waar komt de naam Arluna vandaan? Als ik dat type in Youtube dan krijg ik allerlei vage soap series te zien maar ik vermoed dat die niet de inspiratie voor julie bandnaam zijn 😂

Luna is latijns voor maan. De maan is een bron van inspiratie en magie, is mystiek en verlicht de donkere plekken en dat vonden we mooi en wel bij ons passen. Verder komt de naam Arluna deels uit een vorige band . We hebben daarvan de eerste 2 letters gebruikt .

In 2020 kwam jullie debuut EP uit, hoe is die ontvangen? 

Onze debuut Ep Salvation Star was eerst bedoeld als demo om naar venues te sturen,

maar hebben we op spotify gezet omdat we het te goed vonden om er verder niets mee te doen. De EP is goed ontvangen en we kregen hele leuke reacties en mails met de vraag of de EP fysiek te koop is. Er zijn geen reviews van en we hebben de EP ook niet zo gepromoot. Daar waren we niet zo mee bezig : het doel was een visitekaartje neer te zetten .

Als ik Salvation Star luister, dan hoor ik verschillende symphonische en progressive bands terug. Nou ken ik David een beetje omdat ik in een lang verleden met hem heb samen gespeeld dus ik weet een beetje waar zijn inspiratie vandaan komt. Welke inspiratiebronnen nemen de andere bandleden mee? 

David zat nog niet in de band. Hij is er later bijgekomen en heeft niet meegeschreven op Salvation Star en Universal Destiny. De inspiratiebronnen van ons zijn zeer divers. Aron onze drummer luistert veel naar Metalcore, Joan luistert veel naar Symphonic Metal, Robin, de andere gitarist, luistert veel naar Melodic/ Progressive metal.De toenmalige bassist luisterde Modern metal en ik, Leo, luister graag naar Old school metal en Symphonic metal. Het is een samensmelting van inspiraties.

Hoe zit dat met inspiratie voor teksten? Is Universal Destiny heel bewust een soort concept album waar jullie naartoe geschreven hebben? Of hadden jullie toevallig een aantal tracks op de plank liggen met een zelfde thema? Waar komt de inspiratie voor Universal Destiny vandaan? 

We hadden 2 of 3 tracks die we tekstueel goed bij elkaar vonden passen. Het idee ontstond toen om een conceptalbum te maken. De rest van de nummers hebben we er speciaal voor geschreven. De inspiratie komt deels uit persoonlijke ervaringen, maar ook uit een esoterische en filosofische kijk op het leven.

Wat is die Universal Destiny die we allemaal hebben, ongeacht onze ervaringen en achtergronden? 

Universal Destiny verwijst naar concepten zoals lot, karma of een gemeenschappelijk doel voor alle individuen in het Universum ,ongeacht onze individuele ervaringen en achtergronden. De titels van de nummers verwijzen naar een reis van duisternis naar verlichting en van onzekerheid naar het vervullen van een lotsbestemming.

In lijn met de potentie die een ieder bezit; wat willen jullie als Arluna graag bereiken? 

Wij willen graag meer naamsbekendheid krijgen, een groter publiek bereiken en natuurlijk vette nummers schrijven .

Is het een bewust keuze om zonder toetsenist op het podium te spelen? Gaat dat ooit nog live gebeuren? 

Het is uit noodzaak geboren, omdat we heel kritisch zijn en de paar toetsenisten die we op auditie kregen niet voldeden aan wat wij van ze verwachtten. Of er was geen klik met de persoon. Wellicht voor de toekomst als het op ons pad zou komen, maar we zijn er nu niet naar op zoek. 

Ik heb stiekem al de tracks van album geluisterd. De mix is daarop net iets meer in balans dan op de EP. Is dit zelf opgenomen en gemixt? Of hebben jullie dat ergens laten doen? 

Alles is in eigen beheer gedaan. We hebben zelf alles opgenomen en gemixt. Het Masteren heeft Robin samen met The People’s Noise gedaan.

Wat vinden jullie zelf de vetste track van het album? En waarom? 

We hebben allemaal een nummer wat we het vetst vinden, maar hebben allen voor ‘Escape from Darkness’ als single gekozen, omdat we dit nummer het meest geschikt vonden om als single uit te brengen.

De artwork van het nieuwe album ziet er super mooi uit. Zijn jullie heel erg bezig met uitstraling? Of wil je vooral lekker muziek schijven en doen waar je blij van wordt? Wat is daarin belangrijk voor Arluna?

Ja we zijn allen zeer visueel ingesteld en houden van mooie album art. We houden van het proces van schrijven/spelen en finetunen totdat iedereen in de band tevreden is.

De artwork is net zo belangrijk als de muziek, en moet een match zijn die onze muziek weerspiegelt.

Ook zie ik steeds meer social media posts voorbij komen. Hoe belangrijk is social media tegenwoordig als je in een band speelt? 

Je wilt als band je publiek bereiken en Social media heeft nu voor ons een grote rol, omdat we deze keer ons Album ‘Universal Destiny’ flink willen promoten. Plus dat we het natuurlijk heel tof zouden vinden als er veel mensen naar de Albumrelease show komen.

De technische skills van de muzikanten komen goed naar voren in jullie muziek.  Nou vind ik de zang op jullie vorige EP, maar ook op het huidige album, vrij vlak en monotoon. Is dat een bewust keuze van de zangeres?

De zanglijnen zijn bewust zo gekozen. Wij vinden het mooi,expressief en dynamisch, omdat er in de zang genoeg variatie in toonhoogte zit .

Zit er meer nieuwe muziek in de pijplijn voor Arluna? Of kunnen we ook een videoclipje verwachten?  

We hebben alweer 2 nieuwe nummers in de pijplijn die we natuurlijk weer gaan finetunen. We willen ook met verschillende maatsoorten gaan experimenteren.

Verder blijft het een ongoing progress van dingen uitproberen. Ook zijn we aan het nadenken over een videoclip.

En tot slot; zijn er Nederlandse bands die jullie ook heel vet vinden of waar jullie naar opkijken? (Zo niet heb ik nog wel wat tips haha)

Jazeker, wij vinden natuurlijk Within Temptation en Epica erg fijn om naar te luisteren. Ik moet daarbij wel zeggen dat onze inspiraties daar niet vandaan komen. We proberen vanaf het begin een geheel eigen sound te creëren.

Arluna is a relatively new symphonic metal band. A week ago, they released the first single from their new album, Universal Destiny. It’s time to ask the band some questions about their inspiration for this new album and to get to know them better.

For those of you who are reading this and may not know you yet (and there are probably many); tell us! Who are you, what do you do, where are you from?

We are the Symphonic metal band Arluna (Joan, Leo, David, Robin, Aron). We practice in Leiden. We are busy composing and arranging music. We experiment by combining different musical elements to create a unique Arluna sound.

Where does the name Arluna come from? When I type that into Youtube, I get all sorts of vague soap series, but I suspect those are not the inspiration for your band name 😂

Luna is Latin for moon. The moon is a source of inspiration and magic, it’s mystical and illuminates the dark places, which we found beautiful and fitting for us. Furthermore, the name Arluna partly comes from a previous band. We used the first 2 letters of that name.

Your debut EP came out in 2020, how was it received?

Our debut EP “Salvation Star” was initially intended as a demo to send to venues, but we put it on Spotify because we thought it was too good to do nothing with it. The EP was well received, and we received very nice reactions and emails asking if the EP was physically available for purchase. There are no reviews of it, and we didn’t promote the EP much. We weren’t really focused on that: the goal was to make a calling card.

When I listen to “Salvation Star,” I hear various symphonic and progressive bands. Now, I know David a bit because I played with him in the distant past, so I have an idea of where his inspiration comes from. What inspirations do the other band members bring?

David wasn’t in the band yet. He joined later and didn’t contribute to “Salvation Star” or “Universal Destiny.” Our inspirations are very diverse. Aron, our drummer, listens a lot to Metalcore, Joan listens a lot to Symphonic Metal, Robin, the other guitarist, listens a lot to Melodic/Progressive metal. The former bassist listened to Modern metal, and I, Leo, like to listen to Old school metal and Symphonic metal. It’s a fusion of inspirations.

What about inspiration for lyrics? Is “Universal Destiny” a consciously crafted concept album that you’ve written towards? Or did you happen to have a number of tracks with a similar theme lying around? Where does the inspiration for “Universal Destiny” come from?

We had 2 or 3 tracks that we felt had lyrics that fit well together. The idea arose then to make a concept album. The rest of the songs were written specifically for it. The inspiration partly comes from personal experiences but also from an esoteric and philosophical view of life.

What is this Universal Destiny that we all share, regardless of our experiences and backgrounds?

Universal Destiny refers to concepts such as fate, karma, or a common purpose for all individuals in the Universe, regardless of our individual experiences and backgrounds. The titles of the songs refer to a journey from darkness to enlightenment and from uncertainty to fulfilling a destiny.

In line with the potential that each of us possesses; what would you like to achieve as Arluna?

We would like to gain more recognition, reach a larger audience, and of course, write awesome songs.

Is it a conscious choice to perform without a keyboardist on stage? Will that ever happen live?

It was born out of necessity because we are very critical, and the few keyboardists we auditioned did not meet our expectations. Or there was no connection with the person. Perhaps in the future if it comes our way, but we’re not actively seeking it now.

I’ve secretly listened to the tracks from the album. The mix is a bit more balanced than on the EP. Was this self-recorded and mixed? Or did you have it done somewhere?

Everything was done in-house. We recorded and mixed everything ourselves. Robin did the mastering together with The People’s Noise.

What do you personally think is the coolest track on the album? And why?

We all have a favorite track, but we all chose “Escape from Darkness” as the single because we felt this track was most suitable to release as a single.

The artwork of the new album looks really beautiful. Are you very focused on appearance? Or do you just want to write good music and do what makes you happy? What’s important for Arluna in that regard?

Yes, we are all very visually oriented and love beautiful album art. We love the process of writing/playing and fine-tuning until everyone in the band is satisfied. The artwork is just as important as the music and should be a match that reflects our music.

I also see more and more social media posts coming by. How important is social media nowadays when you’re in a band?

You want to reach your audience as a band, and social media now plays a big role for us because this time we want to promote our album “Universal Destiny” heavily. Plus, of course, we would be very excited if a lot of people come to the album release show.

The technical skills of the musicians come through well in your music. Now, I find the vocals on your previous EP, as well as on the current album, quite flat and monotonous. Is that a deliberate choice of the vocalist?

The vocal lines are deliberately chosen this way. We find it beautiful, expressive, and dynamic because there is enough variation in pitch in the vocals.

Is there more new music in the pipeline for Arluna? Or can we expect a music video as well?

We already have 2 new songs in the pipeline that we will of course fine-tune again. We also want to experiment with different time signatures. Furthermore, it’s an ongoing progress of trying out things. We’re also thinking about making a music video.

And finally, are there any Dutch bands that you also think are very cool or that you look up to? (If not, I have some tips haha)

Absolutely, we of course like listening to Within Temptation and Epica. I must say that our inspirations don’t come from there. From the beginning, we’ve been trying to create our own unique sound.
