It has been a while since this EP got released, but we eventually found the time to write a review about it. Better late then never, right! So let’s dive into Love and Pieces by Necrotesque!

Necrotesque
Necrotesque – the name alone (a gruesome mix of “necrotic” and “grotesque”) says it all: this is an uncompromising Old School Death Metal band. Formed in the spring of 2021, these four seasoned musicians bring together a tasty blend of Death, Doom, Black, Thrash, and Rock-‘n-Roll.
Following their 2023 album The Perpetuated Festing, they return with a fresh new EP: Love and Pieces. Sounds romantic for those who like it bloody. In just 15 minutes, you’re served with three tracks heavily inspired by legends like Grave, Asphyx, Entombed, and Bolt Thrower, but with their own groovy, swinging twist.
Track-by-track
Legions of Rot
The title sounds like the official anthem of a zombie horde, and honestly, it feels like it too. The track starts off subtly but quickly kicks into high gear. Pounding riffs, crushing grooves, and a sing-along chorus make this the standout hit of the EP. Don’t stand in the front row if you value your ribs.
The Vegan Meat Grinder
It starts slow and ominous, with drummer Harald building tension like a tank rolling in. Then it explodes into a furious death ‘n roll assault. The bass and guitar form a solid wall of sound that proves this band isn’t just fast, they know how to groove.
Demented Dismemberment
This banger opens with a creepy sample that instantly transports you into a horror movie and then the hammer drops. It’s a brutal mix of cinematic atmosphere and musical violence. Lodewijk’s vocals are raw and deep, yet surprisingly understandable if you’re into that sort of thing, something I personally always appreciate in death metal. The dark humor in the samples works surprisingly well and gives the track that little extra touch.
The only point of critique, and I had to dig for this one: is that the vocal timing could occasionally be slightly tighter. It would make the music even more catchy.
Conclusion
Short, heavy, and nasty. “Love and Pieces” is a pure shot of old school brutality, with enough groove to keep you moving.
It’s great to see that old school death metal is alive and well in the Netherlands, and Necrotesque prove that they not only honor the past but bring fresh energy to the present. From crushing riffs to subtle humor, this EP does exactly what it’s supposed to do. I think the Dutch metal scene will be eager to hear more from this band. The production sounds crisp while maintaining the atmosphere fans of this style truly appreciate.
